Late fruit scab infections of apple in the Lower Elbe region in 2015

A moderate ascospore season with
only one severe infection period from 25 to 27
April, most apple orchards in the Lower Elbe region
showed lesser degrees of infection by apple
scab (Venturia inaequalis) than in the two preceding
years. Nevertheless there was a high incidence of late pre-harvest fruit scab and postharvest
storage scab. This was due to conidial infections arising from a limited number of primary
scab lesions within individual trees. Unusually damp weather during summer and autumn
2015 generated several periods of prolonged uninterrupted wetness necessary for fruit infections
during the second half of the vegetation period.
