Epiphytic fungi on the apple fruit

Reyes-DomĂnguesz Y., Gallmetzer A., Kelderer M., Kiem U. (2018). Epiphytische Pilze auf dem Apfel/Epiphytic fungi on the apple fruit

As of 2014, different fungi lead to deficiencies in the organic cultivation in South Tyrol. Thus, Laimburg Research Centre together with the South Tyrolean Extension Service intensively worked on this problem.

The previous research at Laimburg Research Centre confirm the observations made in practice: the fungi advance during the storage or fruits without symptoms at the beginning of the storage can develop symptoms of Sooty mold during the storage. The conditions during the storage seem to play an important role in this regard. Thus, the research in this direction will be intensified in the future and will include post-harvest treatments with hot water. Through this method, the surface of the fruits covered with sooty mold did not extend further. These first positive evidence is going to be investigated further together with possible additional measurements in the post-harvest, such as brushes.
