Variety Innovation, a stepping stone

Massimo Zago, Südtiroler Landwirt Nr. 6, March 2018

When planning a new orchard, the grower needs to decide which of the many old and new varieties are suitable for the location. At the same time, marketing strategies play an important role. These strategies depend on characteristics of the different varieties, such as harvest timing, qualification of the variety for the fresh market or for the industry, qualification for the wholesale or for the sale from the farm. For these considerations, the information about the properties of the different varieties need to be available. These are described by the breeder in a catalogue. However, the information derives usually from growing conditions and locations different than the ones of the grower. In addition, there are different combinations with rootstocks and the breeder might not have an objective view of his/her variety. Thus, testing the varieties in the local conditions is very important.
