What does a orchard mean to a Lithuanian?

In the article mention about scientific activities of Institute of Horticulture, LRCAF. The key research objectives and directions: biotechnological approach for improvement of resistance to biotic and abiotic factors in horticultural plants, identification of specific genes, development of molecular markers, development of novel, safe to environment, organic and competitive plant growing technologies,evaluation of changes in biologically valuable compounds, contaminants and quality of processed fruits, vegetables and berries, optimization of storage and processing technology for development of innovative products and technologies. One of the major object is accumulation and preservation genetic resources of horticultural plants in Lithuania.
At the institute genebank preserved old local apple cultivars: Beržininkų ananasinis, Alyviniai, Panemunės baltasis, Montvilinis, Žemaičių grietininis and et.al. In new breeding programe was created winterhardy, good fruit quality, resistant to main fungal diseases and pest apple cultivars Rudenis, Aldas, Skaistis.
