Publication: "New apple varieties with added value"

In Switzerland, the varieties Gala, Golden Delicious and Braeburn dominate the production and the market. The variety testing at Agroscope aims at finding new varieties that bring a benefit to consumers, distributors and producers. The testing involves several stages in order to determine performance, susceptibility to diseases, growth behavior, fruit quality, storage characteristics, as well as organoleptic properties of new varieties. The article presents the fire-blight robust variety Scilate-Envy®, the early ripening Minneiska-SweeTango® and the tasty Fresco-Wellant® as promising new varieties with advantages compared to common varieties currently available on the market.
