Alternative weed managment

Report on a open growers day at pcfruit (Belgium) when two alternative technologies were demonstrated to control weeds in orchards. As the use of herbicides is under pressure, non-chemical alternatives should be envisaged. A first technology, the multihog Wave Machine, is based on warm water applications of nearly 100°C on a monthly basis sprayed under the pome fruit trees. A second technology, the Weedtech Foamstream, is using warm water containing potato starch. Due to the phycial phoam formation, the contact of the weed is improved and prolonged. Both techniques showed promising results for further use in pome fruit weed control strategies.
