The Open Day Technical Meeting (19th in Catalan language, 20th October in Spanish language) on fruit production is the most important meeting of fruit industry in Spain an also in the South of Europe accounting more than 1600 people in two days. The objective is to provide precise information about different aspects of technology of crop production an also to expose the experience of some other producing country through an invited speaker. Of course, the works carried out on testing the new cultivars and rootstocks are always the main topic of interest. The full data about agronomical performance and fruit quality of new cultivars of apple, pear and peach were provided on the basis of the testing program carried out by IRTA since 1994 in apple and pear. More than 800 new cultivars have been tested over the last 22 years and the information recorded has been continuously disseminated to the fruit industry. Apple production in Spain is still based on ‘Golden Delicious’ as the main variety but a lot of new improved red strains of the original cultivars are continuously tested and planted by the industry. In pear, only few new cultivars are developed as is the case of ‘Qtee’ managed as “club” variety. Development of 2D or “fruiting wall” systems more adapted to the mechanization is one of the other topics of field day exhibition.
