Funding application: A Cost Action proposal on INternational ABscission NETwork (INABNET; Reference OC-2017-1-21939) was submitted to COST European Cooperation in Science and Technology.

Summary
The purpose of this COST Action is to establish an EU led international consortium to exchange,
secure and expand knowledge and to develop and share tools to overcome current challenges (e.g.
unpredictable thinning responses) and limitations (crop losses) that plant organ abscission imposes
on agricultural and horticultural productivity, biomass allocation and food security. In particular, we
aim to provide a knowledge platform for breeding and agronomic applications to control plant organ
abscission in a wide variety of economically important species. The multidisciplinary project brings
together scientists from diverse scientific disciplines to advance fundamental understanding of how
plants regulate organ abscission in response to environmental change, abiotic and biotic stresses to optimize and secure stable yields for the future. This COST Action is organized into six working groups (WGs) that address fundamental and applied knowledge of organ abscission with a common goal:
compile all the current information available about organ abscission to develop strategies to improve
production and quality of plant products through modulating the abscission behavior of cultivated
species. In this regard, we would like to emphasize that the organization of this COST Action is
intended to achieve a high level of coordination between the differently scoped WGs in order to
maximize the benefits from networking. This COST Action is designed to streamline the exploitation of fundamental knowledge to benefit stakeholders and sustain EU agricultural production and food security.
