REDUCING USE OF PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS : PROTECTING APPLE TREES WITH RAIN COVERS

The aim of a rain cover is to create a barrier between the trees and the rain and in doing so limit the development of apple scab and even Gloeosporium rot. This article reviews six years of experiments carried out by the Ctifl and gives the inital conclusions of the rain cover work group. The results are encouraging, but the study is ongoing in order to understand the influence of the covers on the canopy microclimate, irrigation management, control of other pests and diseases, as well as fruit yield and quality. The final objectifves are to reduce pesticide use and limit the potential risk of residues on fruit.
