When confronted with red-fleshed varieties, the consumer reacts first with amazement, then with interest and curiosity. The long-term success can only be guaranteed, if the product can also meet the expectations. If this is not the case, the whole segment of red-fleshed apples can suffer. Projects with red-fleshed varieties don’t put the variety in the focus but an umbrella brand. Under this brand, the varieties can be substituted. This allows for flexibility but contains also risks for the producers.
In the breeding of red-fleshed varieties there is still room for growth and there will be many improvements in the coming decade. Some breeders are also working on yellow-fleshed apple varieties.
