“Feeding A Hungry Planet” Youth Ag-Summit 2017 hosted by Bayer Crop Science

ABSTRACT
What are the key messages you want delegates to take away from your presentation / discussion?
• Horticulture is a complex, diverse multidisciplinary, multifunctional subject.
• Horticulture is high value, highly nutritious food crops and beautiful environments.
• Horticulture has great potential for helping to meet the SDG’s.
What is the call to action for the delegates?
We need to:
- stand up for horticulture;
- demonstrate importance of horticulture to society;
- communicate positive/exciting career pathways to students, parents and politicians;
- engage in committed universal vision and cooperation among local and international sectors;
- attract more investment in basic and applied research, extension and infrastructure;
- identify champions for horticulture at all levels.
We must gain knowledge of underlying plant developmental mechanisms and industry requirements
to generate both specialists and generalists with a holistic view. The educational pathway must be
aimed at making students ‘FIT FOR TOMORROWS MARKET OPPORTUNITIES’.
