The tasteful strawberry of South Tyrol

The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a perennial plant and it presents a high phenotypic variability. This means that it shows a high variability of all the displaied characteristics, such as for example: morphology, colour, physiological and biochimical characteristics.
The interaction with the environment is highly significant: the same variety (or cultivar) cultivated in different climates and environments could show completely different behaviours.
Therefore, it is very important to study each cultivar in the selected production area.
For 35 years, Laimburg Research Centre works on variety testing of strawberries. The tested varieties derive from breeding programs all over the world. Obviously, these varieties are mainly adapted to the needs and the climatic conditions of the areas in which they are bred (northern Italy and mild climatic areas of Europe). Therefore, most of these varieties are not adapted to the high altitudes and climatic conditions of the mountainous region of South Tyrol. Thus, Laimburg initiated its own breeding program in 2010. The crossing among selected parents generates several individuals. The best of these are then selected, multiplied and tested in always bigger plots. The best selections are cultivated in big plots to determine their behaviour in open field. Today, 8 selections of Laimburg resulted to have interesting characteristics for the cultivation in South Tyrolean areas.
