Obsteinlagerung 2016 - Fruit storage 2016

There is an increasing pressure, to deliver fruits that fulfill the high expectations of the consumers. Therefore post-harvest methods play a more and more important role for quality preservation. This is especially important for pears, for which since 2013 the Smart-FreshTM method is authorized in Switzerland. This method controls the Ethylene production of this climacteric fruit with the Ethylene antagonist 1-MCP and can be an additional treatment to standard preservation methods (controlled atmosphere).
The variety Conférence reacts particularly strong to the treatment of Smart-Fresh, even during several days of post-storage at 20 °C the ripening process is stopped. Several tests have been executed with the goal to optimize the treatment, which means to not stop the post-ripening process completely.
Still more experiences are needed with the varieties Williams, Kaiser Alexander and Harrow Sweet, but over one to two seasons showed highly promising results.
