Cracking of the apple:
Symptoms: first small, superficial cracks in the fruit-skin, grow with increasing ripening and duration of storage, are mainly located in the central area of the fruits. Mostly, not only the skin cracks but also parts of the pulp below. The pulp of the cracked fruits is mealy and at times dry, the fruit loses its juiciness and taste. Often, fungi infest the cracked spots and they rot.
Cause: too late harvest, delay in storage, too long storage or unfavorable storage conditions. (high humidity and high temperatures during storage increase the symptoms).
Prevention: Cracking can be prevented through timely harvest, removing the fruits from storage on time and ideally adapted storage conditions.
