Irrigation workshop for soft fruit growers

On the 10th of May, the first showcase event was carried out at NIAB EMR by FERTINNOWA and the WET centre partners. Growers and irrigation managers from the Asplins PO had the opportunity to learn about the outcomes of the FERTINNOWA benchmark study, the Fertigation bible, a valuable tool for growers and showcase the technologies exchanged on the WET centre. Julian Gruzelier, Technical Manager of Netafim UK presented the main things to consider for the design of an irrigation system for optimising water delivery and uniformity. Dick Jenkins from Delta-T Devices explained precision irrigation managment with the use of sensors and environmental monitoring. Later on the day, Antonio Llorente from NIAB EMR demonstrated all the technologies being showcased on the WET centre (precision irrigation management, rainwater harvesting, different types of substrates, etc.).

Participants were keen on improving the water use efficiency on their farms with precision irrigation but they highlighted that they need learn more about how to manage irrigation efficiently without compromising berry yield and quality particularly in relation to EC management.
