Technologies for organic apple production: research at Laimburg Research Centre

Replant disease:
Different composts and specific products available on the market were tested and compared regarding their effect against the replant disease. The length of the sprouts and the formed dry substances were examined as indices. All the composts tested showed a slight efficiency but the growth was much inferior than the one of the sterilized control. Of the products based on microorganisms, only two presented a slight improvement in growth compared to the untreated testimony.

In addition, a comparison between the following different fertilization methods was undertaken: composts, solarisation (natural treatment with heath through the help of a special cloth) with and without the addition of compost, treatment with vapor and the specific products Herbie® and Biofence®. The treatment with vaper and the vegetal extracts led to interesting primary results.

The wooly aphid:
In a trial, hydrated lime was tested against the wooly aphid and compared to the standard product Polithiol but no efficiency was found. Different typologies of pruning the trees were tried regarding their effects on the attacks of the wooly aphid. Long pruning showed the best results in this regard.
The rootstocks G11 and G41 seemed to be susceptible to the wooly aphid.

Scab:
Scab is a difficult fungus and not easy to confront in organic farming. Within the projects Co-Free and Alt.RameInBio alternatives to the application of cupper against scab were tested. The covers of “Keep in Touch®” led to interesting results in this context. However, the practical introduction of these covers seems to be difficult (increase of workload, drainage effects need to be clarified, pollination is reduced, shade caused through the cover and other problems).
