Experiences with Brevis on pears in 2016

Keywords: Chemical thinning, metamitron, 6-BA, Conference, Celina/QTee®, Dicolor

2016 was the first year in which many pear growers used Brevis (metamitron). The experi-ences, however, were very variable and this was no different in our trials. On some parcels there was no thinning, on others the thinning effect was too strong. This overthinning, even with a low dose, did not occur that strong in previous years. What was the reason? In this arti-cle several situations are discussed.

Advice for 2017
Currently there are 3 pear varieties on which it can be necessary to use chemical thinning: Conference, Celina/QTee® and Dicolor. At the moment the advice for the 3 varieties is com-parable.

Slight thinning
• On parcels where only a slight thinning is desired, one may choose a thinning agent based on 6-BA (10 l/ha Exilis, 10 l/ha MaxCel or 2 l/ha Globaryll 100).
• The optimal moment for the treatment with 6-BA is at an average fruit size of 8 to 10 mm.
• Temperature must be > 18 °C on the day of the treatment and the days afterwards.
• There is no selective thinning, the small fruits remain on the tree.
• Only spraying the top of the tree is possible.

Strong thinning

• When a stronger thinning is needed, it is better to spray Brevis at 1.1 kg/ha at an aver-age fruit size of 8 to 12 mm.
• On old weak growing parcels, the dose can be increased to 1.5 kg/ha.
• If one predict uncertain weather, delay the application until a period with stable weather is predicted.
