The prognosis of the global apple assortment predicts an increase of Cripps Pink, Ambrosia, Sciros, Scifresh, Honeycrisp, Nicoter, Red Jonaprince, Pinova and the category of “other varieties” for the coming decade. Instead, a decrease of the so-called commodities, often plyclonal varieties without stipulations for the growing and marketing – like Golden Delicious, Fuji, Idared, Granny Smith and Braeburn, is forecasted. Gala is the only exception of this prophecy: the acreage and the production of this free variety is increasing for years. An important characteristic of clonally optimized varieties is the coloring. According to this, the variety Gala transformed from a bicolored variety with a striped and light red (clones Tenory, Galax and Michtgla) to a variety with intense color and without strips.
