Hail protection at the Lower Elbe
At the Lower Elbe the risk of hail is lower compared
to other cultivation regions. However,
it repeatedly appears that fruits partly suff er
massive hail damages. For that reason, it is recommended
that agricultural companies in risk
areas arrange for a fi nancial cover through an insurance
or by a hail protection system.Around
EUR 3.000,00 per year have to be calculated and
considered per hectare for the building of a hail
protection system. Due to the high investment
sum of about EUR 34.000,- per hectare for building
a hail protective system is only economical
for agricultural companies at the Lower Elbe, if
beside the high hail risk, varieties with a high value
(club varieties) are cultivated or the fruits are
directly placed on the market and consequently
the company has their own quality requirements
which do not allow any compromise.
