The European Fruit Network (EUFRUIT) - Knowledge Platform

EUFRUIT Knowledge Platform is an international open access database of electronic documents related to productivity, sustainability and quality of fruit in the European fruit sector. New knowledge on fruit research and best practice approaches at a European level are available in the database. It is possible to search for information in a specific language.

Focuses are on four thematic areas of critical importance to competitiveness and innovation potential of the European fruit sector:

Storage guidelines for UK plum and cherry growers.

Publication of technical bulletin/guideline - Fruit quality; improvement of fruit handling/storage

Plums and cherries are among the favourite fruits of the consumer, but currently much of the demand is met by imported fruit. With new plum and cherry varieties and new production techniques the UK industry has the potential to increase production. However, post-harvest losses can be significant due to fungal rots and rapid loss of fruit quality. The objective of this project…

Possible causes and prevention strategies of CA/ULO flesh browning in Red Jonaprince

Publication in technical journal - Fruit quality; improvement of fruit handling/storage

Possible causes and prevention strategies of CA/ULO flesh browning in Red Jonaprince In the fruit production region Altes Land in storage season 2011/2012 CA / ULO flesh browning was found in Smart FreshSM (1-methylcyclopropene) treated Red Jonaprince apples. Investigations on concerned lots suggest that mainly large, high sugar and low in calcium fruit were affected. This…

DEFRA/AHDB - Apple Best Practice Guide - Post harvest chapter

Publication of book/booklet/chapter - Fruit quality; improvement of fruit handling/storage

It is increasingly difficult for UK growers to make a profit from their apple crop. Many factors contribute to this situation. It is clear that the future of the UK apple industry is dependent on the production of fruit with the quality characteristics demanded by the consumer. Moreover, in the future, the industry will need to respond to inevitable changes in consumer…

Near-infrared reflection spectroscopy and partial least squares regression to predict α-farnesene and conjugated trienol content in apples during storage

Publication in scientific journal (peer review) - Fruit quality; improvement of fruit handling/storage

Authors Daniela Eisensteckena, Stefan Stürz, Peter Robatscher, Christian W. Huck, Angelo Zanella, Michael Oberhuber Abstract The synthesis of a-farnesene and its degradation to the corresponding oxidation products such as conjugated trienols (CTols) in apple skins is strongly correlated with the incidence of superficial scald, a physiological disorder occurring in apple…
